 Information for Photographers & Illustrators
Working together SPL is a stock agency whose role is to market the images you supply to us by selling the reproduction rights to clients. The client pays a 'reproduction fee' in return for a license to reproduce the image. This fee is divided 50/50 between us, the agency and you, the photographer. As a leading specialist in science, medicine and technology we are constantly updating our collection with new images. If you have a selection of images that you feel would appeal to our wide range of clients we would be very happy to find out more about your work. We currently represent images by professional photographers and illustrators, scientists, doctors, medical and scientific institutions. In order to generate good sales photographers need to submit regularly images which meet the needs of our clients. Ideally, for your first submission, we would like to look at a batch of approximately 100 images. Our clients We sell images to book publishers, magazines, newspapers, medical journals, advertising, design, TV and the web in the UK and also abroad. We currently work with agents in over 30 countries, including America, Europe & Japan. Copyright You should own unrestricted copyright in your imagery. Our contract permits us to sell the rights to reproduce your work but the copyright remains yours. Representation We expect to represent exclusively the images supplied to us. If there are any restrictions on your images, such as countries where we cannot sell them or types of use that we cannot licence, please let us know. Model release If your images contain people we require signed model release forms which give unrestricted usage rights and unrestricted rights to the wording of any printed matter accompanying the photograph. Property release If you have taken photographs on private property, for example in a private garden even if open to the public, you may need to obtain a property release from the owner before selling any images taken there. Here is a sample of our Property Release form. Caption details We require that all images are accompanied by clear and accurate captions. The technical and specialist nature of some of our imagery means that clients rely on us for accuracy. Detailed captions can also increase sales so please provide us with as much information as possible. Image format We accept images in a variety of formats depending on how the image was originally created - transparency, negative, illustration, print, or digital file. We currently request that all digital files are supplied to us on CD. With few exceptions the file sizes should be at least 50MB with no interpolation. The files should be saved as Tiffs and tagged to indicate the colourspace you have been working in. Please download our "Digital guidelines" document if you want to find out more. Packaging and Posting When sending your images through the post please ensure that they are carefully packaged and sent by registered or recorded delivery. We will acknowledge the receipt of the package within a day or two of its arrival. Our contract Here is a sample of our Standard Contract for you to download.
